Reception in horary astrology is a relationship between planets through essential dignity. It helps the astrologer judge support, cooperation and the quality of a connection. Mutual reception means the relationship works in both directions. Neither should be treated as a guaranteed yes without examining the question, planetary condition and the rest of the chart.
The first practical task is to identify who receives whom. Only then should the relationship be interpreted as support, willingness or an ability to bring something about.
This guide explains that direction, the different dignities involved, and how to use reception alongside aspects. The worked examples use William Lilly's dignity table; differences between traditional authors are identified where they change the interpretation.

Who Receives Whom in Horary Astrology?
The planet ruling the relevant dignity is the receiver. The planet occupying that dignity is received. In definitions requiring aspectual contact, the planets must also connect by conjunction or aspect.
Think of a host and a visitor. The dignity ruler is the host; the planet in that territory is the visitor. The host's condition affects what help can be offered. A welcome and the ability to provide assistance are related, but different.
For example, the Moon in Taurus occupies Venus's domicile. When the Moon applies to Venus, Venus receives the Moon by domicile. To establish reception in the other direction, examine Venus's position and ask whether the Moon has dignity there.
This direction is illustrated in Masha'allah's On Reception, Chapter 1, translated by Benjamin Dykes. His examples distinguish a dignity ruler receiving another planet from both planets receiving each other.
A useful way to record the relationship is:
“Planet B receives Planet A by [dignity], because Planet A occupies [sign and degree].”
Write the reverse relationship separately, if it exists. That prevents the common mistake of assuming that every reception is mutual.
Reception, Dignity and Aspects: What Is the Difference?
Essential dignity describes a planet's relationship to the zodiacal position it occupies. Reception concerns its relationship with another planet through dignity. An aspect is a geometrical connection between planets.
For instance, Venus in Pisces is exalted: that describes Venus's own essential condition. Venus receiving the Moon from Taurus describes a relationship between Venus and the Moon. A sextile between them describes their aspect. These observations contribute different information to the judgment.
Reception is therefore not another name for a favorable aspect. A square can involve reception, and a trine does not automatically establish it. For the geometry and the distinction between applying and separating contacts, see the main aspects in horary astrology.
How to Find Reception in a Horary Chart
Start with the planets that actually represent the question. Do not search for an attractive reception and then assign those planets to the people involved. My guide to significators and who represents whom explains that preliminary step.
- Record the signs and exact degrees. Also establish whether the chart is diurnal or nocturnal when the triplicity scheme requires it.
- Use a named dignity table. Check domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term and face at each planet's position.
- Identify each direction separately. Which dignities belong to the other significator? Is the relationship one-way, mutual or absent under the definition being used?
- Examine contact and capacity. Check the aspect, application or separation, relevant changes before exactness, and the receiving planet's ability to act.
The dignity relationship can be identified from the table. What it accomplishes is a further judgment requiring the question and the rest of the chart.
The Five Dignities Used to Assess Reception
The examples in this guide use Lilly's essential-dignity table in Christian Astrology, page 104.
| Dignity | What to check | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Domicile | The ruler of the occupied sign. | A major dignity; older texts also call this reception by house. |
| Exaltation | The planet exalted in that sign. | A major dignity applying throughout the sign, not only at the exact exaltation degree. |
| Triplicity | The ruler of the elemental group under the chosen scheme. | The relevant ruler can change between day and night. |
| Term or bound | The ruler of the occupied degree range. | The exact degree and the chosen term table matter. |
| Face or decan | The ruler of the occupied ten-degree section. | A minor dignity, not equivalent to domicile or exaltation. |
In reception by house, “house” means a zodiacal domicile, not a numbered chart house. A planet is not received by Venus simply because it occupies the 7th house.
Keep the dignity scheme consistent. Egyptian and Ptolemaic terms can assign different rulers to the same degree, and triplicity systems also differ. Name the table rather than switching between systems to obtain stronger testimony.
What Is Mutual Reception?
Mutual reception means both planets receive each other through essential dignity. The dignities can be the same or different.
With the Moon in Taurus and Venus in Cancer, Venus receives the Moon by domicile, and the Moon receives Venus by domicile. Each occupies the other's sign.
With the Moon in Pisces and Jupiter in Taurus, the relationship is mixed: Jupiter receives the Moon by domicile, while the Moon receives Jupiter by exaltation. Mutual reception is therefore not limited to an exchange of domiciles.
Mutuality establishes reciprocity, not identical strength. The two planets can offer different kinds or levels of support, and their own condition still matters. Their aspects and application must be recorded separately.
How Much Weight Should Reception Receive?
The dignity involved and the receiving planet's condition are separate questions. Reception by a major dignity may be substantial even when the receiver has limited ability to help. Conversely, a strong planet does not automatically receive every planet aspecting it.
Traditional authors also differ on minor dignities. Abu Ma'shar describes reception through term, triplicity or face as weak unless dignities combine. In the Bonatti passage, a single minor dignity is insufficient: two must belong to the same receiver. These distinctions appear in the translated passages on reception from Abu Ma'shar and Bonatti.
I therefore name the dignity rather than giving every reception equal weight. Several dignities can strengthen one relationship, but they are not several independent promises that the outcome will occur.
Worked Examples of Reception
These are hypothetical teaching configurations, not historical charts or client cases. Assume direct motion, the Moon moving faster than the other planet, and no interruption or relevant change before the stated contact. Unspecified planets and houses have not been evaluated.
Example 1: One-Way Reception With an Applying Sextile
Suppose someone asks whether a friend will provide practical help. For this illustration, the house assignments have identified the Moon as the querent and Venus as the friend.
Moon: 10° Taurus.
Venus: 13° Pisces.
Venus receives the Moon by domicile because Taurus belongs to Venus. Under Lilly's table, Venus at 13° Pisces does not occupy any of the Moon's dignities, so the reception is one-way.
The Moon applies to sextile Venus. Venus is also exalted in Pisces. The configuration combines a forthcoming contact, reception of the querent's planet, and essential strength in the friend's planet.
I would read that as supportive testimony for the requested help. It is not a complete forecast: Venus's house, proximity to the Sun and other relevant conditions remain unspecified. The example teaches how reception contributes to a judgment, not how to bypass the missing chart.
Example 2: Mutual Reception With a Square
Moon: 10° Aries.
Mars: 13° Cancer.
Mars receives the Moon by domicile because the Moon occupies Aries. The Moon receives Mars by domicile because Mars occupies Cancer. The Moon is also applying to square Mars.
This is a difficult aspect with mutual reception, not a square without support. Mars nevertheless remains in fall in Cancer. Lilly's table also gives Mars water-triplicity dignity, so its essential condition is mixed.
I would preserve both the reciprocal support and the difficulty. Reception can assist the connection; it does not make the square geometrically disappear or justify calling the result effortless. The condition and role of Mars still require judgment.
Example 3: Reception Through Combined Minor Dignities
Day chart.
Moon: 11° Virgo.
Venus: 12° Cancer.
In Lilly's table, Venus rules the earth triplicity by day. At 11° Virgo, Venus also rules the term and face. Venus therefore holds three dignities at the Moon's position, while the Moon applies to sextile Venus.
This meets the combined-minor-dignity requirement described in the Bonatti passage. Under the stated example assumptions, the Moon reaches Venus while still in Venus's term and face. At night, the daytime triplicity contribution would disappear, but those two minor dignities would remain.
There is also reception in the reverse direction: the Moon receives Venus by domicile because Venus occupies Cancer. The relationship is mutual through different dignities, not simply three one-way indications.
The lesson is to check the exact degree, both directions and any change before perfection. Reception at the chart moment should not automatically be carried forward after a planet crosses a dignity boundary.
Does Reception Require an Aspect?
There is no single rule shared by every traditional author. Masha'allah's opening definition connects reception with conjunction or aspect. Abu Ma'shar also recognizes aspectual reception without application, while treating application as stronger.
Lilly goes further in his discussion of mutual reception. In Christian Astrology, page 112, he expressly allows it to help bring a matter about even when the principal significators have no aspect. A blanket statement that traditional reception always requires an applying aspect would therefore misrepresent the sources.
Consider Mercury at 10° Aquarius and Saturn at 10° Virgo. Each occupies the other's domicile, but they form no major Ptolemaic aspect. That establishes the reciprocal dignity relationship; it does not establish a direct applying contact.
My approach is to state both facts and identify the interpretive rule being used. I would not silently invent an aspect or treat every exchange of signs as an unconditional yes.
Can a Debilitated Planet Still Be Received?
Yes. A planet's own debility and its reception by another planet concern different relationships. The Moon in Capricorn is in detriment, but Capricorn is Saturn's domicile. If the Moon applies to Saturn, Saturn receives the Moon by domicile.
That reception does not erase the Moon's placement. It raises a further question: what can Saturn contribute, given its own condition and role? Reception may help a troubled significator without making every other difficulty irrelevant.
This distinction is emphasized in Deborah Houlding's discussion of reception and planetary condition. A supportive relationship and the practical benefit available through it should be assessed together.
Likewise, the absence of reception is not the same observation as detriment or fall. Name the actual condition rather than using “bad reception” as a catch-all label.
Does Reception Show Love or Someone's Feelings?
In relationship horary, reception can contribute to an interpretation of regard, willingness or cooperation. But “Venus receives the Moon” does not automatically mean “Venus loves the Moon.”
The same configuration might involve a friend offering help, an employer considering an applicant or a couple discussing reconciliation. The interpretation must follow the assigned significators and the actual question, not a universal emotional keyword.
Some interpretive approaches emphasize the planet occupying another's dignities as being oriented toward that planet. That is an additional interpretation of the placement; it does not reverse which planet technically receives which. State the dignity relationship before deciding whose feelings it may describe.
One-way reception is not proof of unrequited love, and mutual reception is not proof of compatibility or lasting commitment. These are astrological interpretations, not independently verified access to another person's private thoughts. For the distinction between contact forming and a relationship developing well, read how aspects affect relationship horary.
Does Mutual Reception Mean the Answer Is Yes?
Not as a standalone rule for every question. Mutual reception can be significant testimony for cooperation or accomplishment, but its meaning depends on the planets' roles, the dignities involved, their condition and the method being followed.
An apparent application can change if a planet stations, reverses direction, changes sign or encounters relevant interference. A sign change may alter the reception even when a later aspect still occurs. Where direct application is absent, translation or collection of light may provide another connection, but those techniques have their own conditions.
A separating contact can describe an existing or past relationship without supplying a new future event. Conversely, an absent direct aspect should not end the inquiry before the astrologer considers other legitimate testimony and the author's rules for mutual reception.
For the complete interpretation process, see how to read a horary chart.
From Reception to a Defensible Judgment
I separate the technical observation, its interpretation and the final prediction.
Observation: Venus receives the Moon by domicile, and the Moon applies to sextile Venus.
Interpretation: In the friend-helping example, that supports cooperation.
Prediction: Whether the requested help is actually delivered requires the remaining chart testimony.
Keeping those steps distinct makes the reasoning easier to examine. It prevents reception from becoming a shortcut that reverses the receiver, ignores debility or turns a supportive relationship into certainty.
To examine broader judgments recorded before their outcomes and reviewed afterward, explore the Horary Case Files. These are records of practice, not proof that an individual technique guarantees a result.
Applying Reception to Your Own Question
Reception becomes useful when it connects the right significators to a clearly defined inquiry. The aim is not to find a favorable exchange of signs, but to explain what that relationship contributes—and what it leaves unresolved.
